Is there hope in addiction?
We are not alone! The church desires to be close to her children who are struggling with addiction and to bring her children the healing power of Jesus Christ’s love
Jeremiah 33:6
I will heal my people and will let them enjoy abundant peace and security
Jeremiah 33:8
I will cleanse them from all the guilt of their sin against me, and I will forgive all the guilt of their sin and rebellion against me.
From the above scriptures, we can liken the Israelites to being into addiction of idolatry. Jeremiah gave the Israelites this message of hope after Jeremiah had prophesied ‘doom’ into the lives of the Israelites. Today, let us tap into this message of hope. God will heal us and let us enjoy abundant peace (especially inner peace) and security. God will cleanse us all from our sins, He will forgive us all and restore us.
Testimonies
Here is one testimony of a family of addiction
“I have 3 adult children, two of whom are addicts. My oldest daughter became addicted to Adderall in her senior year of college. 12 years have passed, and her addiction to prescription drugs has cost her custody of her two daughters, her sanity, and her ability to work and hold a job. She also has criminal record for forging a prescription for Adderall.
My son became addicted to heroin when he was 21. He has been in and out of prison several times for stealing things in order to buy more heroin. He is now 33 and in treatment for about the 7th time. His addiction has cost him his family, his home, his finances and his ability to be hired for a decent job.
I am grateful they are both still alive but it has been devastating to witness the effect of addiction on their lives and on their children, who love them very much”
Another testimony of an addict
“I am recovering from alcohol in my 16th year. In my early stages of recovery, I was very touched by this story of Gerasene demoniac in the gospel of Mark (5:1-20). It was already a favorite of mine because it is such a powerful story. But in my recovery, it struck me that this is a story about a drunk. Actually, this man is possessed by a demon, but I saw him as a fellow drunk. The more I reflected on this story, the more I realized how perfectly it describes the life of addiction and the good news of the possibility of recovery.”
Dear friends, like I have always been mentioning, I feel none of us here is yet addicted. Meanwhile, I can’t speak for us all and I don’t know how many of us here are going through some struggles. We can pick inspirations from these testimonies.
However, let us take not that our salvation is very important and so despite our ‘addictions’ or struggles, let us always make it a point to at all times remain in the grace of salvation. We can do this through sincere confessions, appropriate and constant reception of the Eucharist, pray always, read the Bible & pray the rosary every day, fasting (very important).
