How free radicals cause aging and the effect on the body

Many people, if not all, wishes to grow but don’t want to ‘age’ quickly. Everyone wishes to have smooth skin even at age(s) 60+. Unfortunately, majority of the people in the world grows older than their ages; many young adults begin to have wrinkled skins even below age 40. This is a problem. You want to know the cause of ageing/wrinkled skins? Free radicals! Free radicals are the cause of aging. Of course we cant do away with free radicals. Free radicals have become part of us. We find them everywhere; in our food, water, the air, even in the drugs we take. But is there a way out? Can we at least minimize the free radicals in us? We will come back to that. Let us now look into details what free radicals are.

Free radicals, as we all know from basic chemistry are unstable atoms that can damage cells, causing aging and illness.

To understand free radicals very well, it is required that we understand the basic knowledge in chemistry.

Atoms are surrounded by electrons that orbit in layers called shells. Each shell needs to be filled by a set number of electrons. When a shell is full, electrons begin to fill the next shell. An atom may bond with another atom using its electrons if its outer shell isn’t full. These types of atoms are what we call free radicals. Atoms with full outer shell are stable, but free radicals are unstable, and in order to be stable, they react quickly with other substances.

How free radicals damage the body

A theory of aging which was first outlined in 1956, suggests that free radicals break down cells over time.

As the body ages, the body loses its ability to fight the effects of free radicals and this results in more free radicals; causing damage to cell. This also leads to degenerative processes as well as ‘normal’ aging.

Over the years, researchers have tweaked the free radical theory of aging on mitochondria (popularly known as the power house of the cell). Mitochondria are tiny organelles in cells that process nutrients to power the cell.

Free radicals produced in the mitochondria have been found to damage the substances that the cell needs. Researches on rats revealed this evidence. This damage causes mutations that produce more free radicals, thus accelerating the process of damage to the cell.

This theory helps to explain better aging, since aging accelerates over time. The increasingly rapid, but gradual buildup of free radicals offers one explanation for why even healthy bodies age and deteriorate over time

What causes free radicals in the body

Even though free radicals are produced naturally in the body, certain lifestyles can accelerate their production. Free radicals theories of aging may help us to explain why some people age more slowly than others.

Some lifestyles that can accelerate the production of free radicals in the body are:

  • Exposure to harmful and toxic chemicals (pesticides and air pollution
  • Smoking. Whenever we hear smoking, ‘non-smokers’ think they are excluded in this. But we forget that secondary smokers are even affected the more compared to primary smokers
  • Alcohol
  • Fried foods
  • Drugs

How do we get rid of free radicals?

Antioxidants! These are good for ‘eradicating’ free radicals. Antioxidants are molecules that prevent the oxidation of other molecules. These chemicals (antioxidants) also lessen or prevent the effects of free radicals. These chemicals donate electrons to free radicals, thus reducing their reactivity.

Do antioxidant foods and supplement work?

Naturally, there are a lot of antioxidants in rich fruits. There are thousands of chemicals that act as antioxidants; vitamins C, E. beta carotene, glutathione, plant oestrogens called phytoestrogens etc. Fruits like Berries and citrus are good sources of antioxidants. Dieticians suggest that we eat about five different fruits each day to get enough nutrients, coupled with antioxidants to keep the body healthy. However, because many people can’t or wouldn’t be able to eat five different fruits each day, experts have been able to ‘fuse’ these rich fruits/nutrients in a food supplement. There are actually good food supplements that are very good at eradicating the free radicals in our body.
