World Health Day- ‘Building a fairer & healthier world’

April 7 of each year marks the celebration of World Health Day. World Health Organization (WHO) chooses to highlight a special theme current in the wellness and medical world; ranging from insurance to mental health and everything in between. This day sets the tone for what is to come in the world stage.

Last year’s World Health Day ‘shone’ a light on midwives and nurses, the on-the-call, restless workforce that revolutionized the healthcare industry as we know it today. This year, the theme for World Health Day is ‘Building a fairer, healthier world;’ stating that our world is unequal, WHO said that the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted how some people can have better access to health services and live healthier lives than others.

The inception of the World Health Day started at the first Health Assembly in 1948 and since, taking effect in 1950. The celebration has aimed to create awareness of specific health theme to highlight a priority area of concern for the World Health Organization.

HISTORY OF WORLD HEALTH DAY

Before knowing the history of World Health Day, we need to know about the creation of the World Health Organization (WHO) as a whole.
Officials of China and Brazil proposed the creation of an international health in 1945, that is all-encompassing and absolutely independent from any government powers.

In July 1946, the constitution of WHO was approved in New York. The constitution entered into force on 7th April, 1948, as 61 countries signed in agreement for the inception of the NGO.

WHO created the celebration of World Health Day as one of the first official acts of WHO. It was first observed on July 22, 1949, but the date was later changed to 7th April, the establishment of WHO, to encourage student participation.

Based on the suggestions of the member governments and staff, since 1950 each year, World Health Day uses a different theme.

World Health Day provides a global opportunity to focus attention on important public health issues that affect the international community. On the occasion of World Health Day, promotional programs are launched that continue for a long time after April 7.

Happy Health Day.
Live a good life and stay healthy!
