Mother’s Day- All you need to know about Mother’s Day

Mother’s day is day to celebrate mothers and all who play motherly roles across the world. On mother’s day, many people show appreciation to their mothers. Being a mother or playing a motherly role is a ‘job’ that is ever-changing and frequently exasperating. Most mothers don’t get days off, nor do they receive handsome salaries or generous pensions. Even if they get rewards, the rewards are not significant enough.

History of Mother’s Day

The celebration of Mother’s day can be traced back to ancient times when the Greeks and Romans held festivals in honour of the mother goddess Rhea and Cybele. But the early Christian festival known as ‘Mothering Sunday’ stands as the modern precursor. This European tradition fell on the fourth Sunday in Lent. Many believed the faithful would return on this day to their ‘mother church’ (the main church near their home) for special church service. Gradually, the mothering Sunday tradition shifted over time into a more secular holiday where children would give their mothers flowers and other gifts. This custom later blended into the American Mother’s Day around the year 1930 and 1940.

The date for Mother’s Day had been changed from June 2 to July 4. Finally, Anna Jarvis successfully initiated Mother’s Day after her mom, Ann Reeves Jarvis, who died in 1905. Jarvis noted Mother’s Day should contain a “singular possessive,’’ (hence the apostrophe) so each family might honour its own mother- as opposed to all mothers. Jarvis organized the first official Mother’s Day celebration in May 1908 even though she neither married nor had children. Later Jarvis lobbied to make Mother’s Day a national holiday- urging prominent Americans to join the effort. By the year 1912, many states, churches and towns adopted Mother’s Day as an International Association. President Wilson soon established the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day in 1914.

Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers. Brethren, it is not enough to post our Moms on social media. Let us show them love each Day. Everyday is supposed to be Mother’s Day. Let us not forget to pray for our mothers. Even if your mother is dead, pray for her soul.

Enjoy the rest of the day.
