Some months ago, I was on my way home in the rain when some drops of dirty water fell into my eyes. As usual, my eyes “automatically” closed to prevent any more drops of the water from entering into my eyes to cause any harm. Immediately, I remembered something I learnt in science while I was in Basic school, Senior High School and even at the University. What was it? Reflex actions! Reflex action is an involuntary and sudden response to stimuli. It happens to be an integral component of the famed survival instinct. Reflex action is a way for the body to automatically and rapidly respond to a stimulus to minimize any further damage to the body. Reflex actions do not involve the brain.
Below are examples of reflex actions
1. The sudden removal of the hand from a sharp object.
2. Sudden jerky withdrawal of hand or leg when pricked by a pin.
3. Coughing or sneezing due to irritants in the nasal passages.
4. Knees jerk in response to a blow or someone stamping the leg.
5. Sudden blinking when an insect comes very near to the eyes.
Normally, whatever actions we take involve the brain. However, with reflex actions, the brains do not play roles. I can’t imagine someone whose reflex actions do not work properly. People like that will never enjoy life on earth because humans are always exposed to harmful and dangerous things. Reflex actions help us out in these situations.
After reflecting on reflex actions, it deepened my love for God and I realized how good God is. God is so caring, God is love, God protects us every day. Every day is a miracle because we experience reflex actions more often where our brains are not able to help us but God, through reflex actions.
Beloved, there are so many reasons we need to thank God. God created us, redeemed us and gave us freedom to do whatever thing we want. However, at certain situations in our lives we will always be helpless, and it will always be reflex actions that will help us out.
Today, I just want to encourage us all to keep on thanking God. We will be great fools if we are not grateful. Reflex actions are beautiful gifts God has given to humanity!
